BLACK TECHNO MATTERS releases its second compilation of 2024, Liber8 v2: N3W P4RA1GM, a collection of original tracks inspired by the call to arms to do “something different, something new” and also serves as a companion piece to the collective’s massive 9-city Juneteenth event Liber8 US 2024. The compilation is split into three parts: BLACK, GREEN, and RED. The colors of the Pan-African, Palestinian and Sudanese flags symbolize solidarity with the anti-colonial movement needed for liberation.

BLACK begins with “Rise” by Phaçade, an uplifting track that sets the tone with vocals that seem to call out for us to reconnect with the earth and our ancestors while looking toward the future. Song titles like MerlinBerlin’s seductive “Belsidus” (named after the fictional leader from the novel Black Empire who succeeds in creating a black independent nation in Africa), santé blu’s playfully short “revolution butterfly” and Diyanna Monet’s subwoofer-testing “Sacr3d TR33” show that the artists are imagining new ideas and frameworks beyond the realm of music.

GREEN consists of a 23 minute live performance by ambient duo Smoke & Tea recorded in the plant-filled Green Room of the Black Techno Matters HQ. Gentle evolving bass melodies do a slow dance with playfully distorted vocals throughout “Green” reflecting a desire to harmonize with nature.

RED ignites with the massive slow distorted breaks of Adam 2’s “Krispy Karim” and is followed by several blistering techno and experimental tracks exuding the energy of change. Tracks like the dark relentless minimalism of [M]’s “Minimal Strides”, the boisterous percussion of BLACKHOUSE’s “Commotion”, the emotionally resonant synths of TP2’s “Spirit Bus”, or the provocatively disorienting barrage of B_X_R_N_X_R_D’s “FR33 P4L3ST1N3” reflect the passionate struggle for a liberated future.
